Sandbach Judo Club is committed to equal opportunities and encourages players of any gender, ethnic origin or age to take part. Those with disabilities are also encouraged; they will be taught as part of the main class.
People new to the sport of judo are advised to watch a full session to see if the sport is to their liking. They will see various levels of activity including the teaching of novice, intermediate and advanced players and will be able to see just what will be expected of them as they progress through the grades.
If there are any questions about the activity of judo or the Sandbach Judo Club these can be answered by the Club Coach, one of the senior instructors or the Treasurer or Secretary.
In order to comply with the Childrens' Act parents of children aged 8 years and under are advised of the need for them to stay and watch the whole session. They are also advised of the 'Stranger Danger' and that they should not drop their child off at the car park; they should escort their child to the Dojo and wait with them until after the session starts. Similarly they must come to the Dojo to pick up their child at the end of each session.
New Members & Juniors
New players and parents of junior members are briefed on:
- the need for a BJC Provisional license
- what type of behaviour is expected
- what clothing to wear until a suitable judo suit is obtained i.e. clean jogging bottoms and a sweat shirt both of which must be free from zips, plastic or metal embellishments
- watches, rings, necklaces, jewellery, ear studs / rings and all other piercings to be removed
- the body to be clean, feet and hands to be clean with nails trimmed short
- the need to declare any medical or physical conditions which may be pertinent to the teaching and learning of judo
- the format of the session
New players are introduced to the members of the club at the beginning of the session. The membership is reminded about 'taking it easy' with new members and that they should help them learn what to do.
In the first session novice new players are:
- asked to follow the club warm-up
- are taken to one side and briefed on the basic commands of hajime, matte and how to submit
- taught the early progressions for ushiro ukeme and yoko ukeme
- taught simple hold downs e.g. kesa gatame, kata gatame, mune gatame
- taught the rules of groundwork randori and what acts are forbidden including arm locks and strangles and take part in limited groundwork randori
Throws will not be taught to novices until break falls are performed to a high enough standard to prevent injury occurring. In the following judo sessions the content will be based on the grading syllabus.
New members with prior judo experience will be asked to show their licence and grading record. They will be assessed as to their judo ability and etiquette before being allocated to a teaching group.
